Food [back]
Hay
Good hay is crucial because it should be 80% of a rabbits diet and you need to smell it to make sure it is fresh and sweet smelling. The best places to get meadow hay from are stock food suppliers. You can buy full sized bales from $13 to $30 depending on season and supply. It is always a good idea to call first and check on hay supply.

Pellets
Pellets should never be the only food. The coloured bits in rabbit and guinea pig food is essentially sugary junk food and should be avoided. The sunflower seeds and grains can actually cause harm and should be removed. The better rabbit and guinea pig pellets are made by Oxbow Animal Health and currently these products are available from Lynfield Vets, now Pet Doctors, in Auckland (email or call them to enquire - they do courier), Rappaw Vetenary Clinic, Paremata (you can order the pellets in to other Rappaw Clinics in the Wellington region) and Pet Doctors, Terrace End, Palmerston North. Some Animates stores now stock Burgess Rabbit food, another high quality pellet. Check with your nearest Animates store if they have Burgess in stock.
